Brunswick Inn

1 Railway Terrace
Derby
DE1 2RU

This pub is a grade II listed building and the listing description is as follows: “Railway workers accommodation. Early-mid C19. Red brick, part painted; two storeys; seven sash windows plus one blocked. Ground storey has two plain doorways, one converted into a window and all boarded over; moulded stone eaves; slates. Sharp-angled return (three windows) to side in Calvert Street which has four sash windows plus two blocked. Disused at time of inspection (1974).” According to the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) publication Real Ale in Derby (published in June 2016) the building “was restored by the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust. The Brunswick served the very first purpose-built railway workers estate anywhere and is Derby’s original multiple choice real ale pub. The purpose-built brewery on site supplies own needs and guest beers to other Everards pubs – they bought the business in 2003. The Brewery is on view inside pub. Stone-flagged bar and adjoining lounge, to one side, family parlour in apex and long function room above stairs. The extra deep two-level cellar results from the site having been raised significantly to accommodate the level of the newly arrived railway (and probably to allow for the fact that the whole area was once a swamp). Like many of the nearby buildings (inc the original railway station) it was designed by Francis Thompson and opened (along with the Midland – now Hallmark – Hotel in July 1842.”

Note the Class 37 railway locomotive cab in the car park.

The Brunswick Inn features on the Rams, Rails and Real Ales: Daytime Pub Tour of Derby on 25 March 2023.
