Sunny Daze: Daytime Crawl of Petts Wood, Bromley, Sundridge Park and Grove Park

This crawl marks the sixth anniversary (to the day) since the London Pubs Group crawl of the same name which covered the first four pubs which are on this crawl plus (instead of the last pub on this crawl) three pubs in Bellingham, Catford and Forest Hill, one of which (the Fellowship in Bellingham) is currently closed for major restoration and refurbishment.

1. Daylight Inn

Arrive: 12.00 Noon

Address: The Daylight Inn, Station Square, Petts Wood, BR5 1LZ

Real ales: Fuller’s London Pride; St Austell Tribute; Sharp’s Doom Bar; and Thatcher’s Stan’s Big Apple Cider are usually served here.

The next pub on the crawl (a Fuller’s pub) is the official lunch stop but very reasonably priced meals can be purchased here at the Daylight Inn if preferred.

Directions to next pub: On leaving the pub, walk to Petts Wood railway station, walk over the footbridge to the other side of the station then cross over the road to bus stop C (called Queensway/Petts Wood Station). Catch a 208 bus to stop Z (called High Street/Market Square), alight from the bus and turn left. Walk down Bromley High Street to the junction with Church Road and walk into

2. Partridge

Arrive: 1.15 PM.

Address: The Partridge, 194 High Street, Bromley, BR1 1HE.

Real ales: Fuller’s ESB, London Pride and Oliver’s Island; Gales HSB; and two guest beers are usually served here. There is a discount on real ale for card-carrying CAMRA members.

This Fuller’s pub is the official lunch stop but the previous pub, the Daylight Inn, Petts Wood serves very reasonably priced meals if preferred.

Directions to next pub: On leaving the pub, note the splendid exterior of the Royal Bell on the other side of the High Street. This pub has been closed for many years but there is now a possible scheme for it which is at pre-application stage so there may be a positive outcome for the building in due course. The Royal Bell is grade II listed and the listing description is as follows: “Architect Ernest Newton. This range was rebuilt in 1898 on the site of an earlier hostelry of 1666. 4 to 5 storeys red brick. Slate roof with 9 pedimented dormers. Dropped modillion cornice. 3 3-light bays with pargetting containing Neo-Jacobean motifs. 2 1-light sashes; all with pargetting. 1 plain door and main doorcase with curved pediment supported on Roman Ionic ½ columns. Later shopfronts.” Cross over the High Street, turn left and walk up the High Street to

3. Star & Garter

Arrive: 2.45 PM.

Address: The Star & Garter, 227 High Street, Bromley, BR1 1NZ.

Real ales: Eight handpumps dispense six real ales and two real ciders.

Directions to next pub: Leave the pub via the rear garden gate exit, turn left into Walters Yard and walk along Walters Yard to the junction with College Slip. Turn right and walk along College Slip to the junction with West Street. Turn right, walk to bus stop N (called West Street) and catch a 126, 261, 314 or 336 bus to the stop called Plaistow Green. Alight from the bus, turn right and walk up College Road. Cross London Lane and continue following the road as it bears left and becomes Burnt Ash Lane. Continue to the point where the central road island ends, then cross Burnt Ash Lane and walk directly into Nichol Lane. Walk along Nichol Lane and cross over Nichol Lane to
